Fargo had no trouble picking up the trail left by the six riders as they headed south. They didn’t seem to be trying to conceal their tracks, probably because their natural arrogance led them to believe that they didn’t have to worry about any pursuit.

They would soon find out how wrong they were about that, Fargo told himself. To his experienced eyes, the signs they had left behind were as obvious as the mesas and rock spires that jutted up here and there in the mostly flat landscape.

The problem was that the afternoon was already fairly well advanced. Even though Fargo planned to push along at as fast a pace as the Ovaro could stand, he figured it was unlikely he would catch up to the Sotos before night-fall. That meant Rosa would have to spend at least one night on the trail with her captors before he even had a chance to rescue her.

Fargo hoped that he could count on the old man’s sense of honor to keep Rosa safe, at least for the time being, but the attack on the mine today showed that Soto’s honor sometimes lost out to what his son wanted, as well as to his own desire for revenge on the McLeod family.

If Guillermo laid a hand on her, Fargo would see to it that the young man paid for his crime—with his life, if necessary.

The terrain became even bleaker and more arid south of the mountains. If the men he was following kept going in that direction, they would soon cross over into California and reach the Mojave Desert, one of the most inhospitable places west of the Mississippi. For that reason, Fargo expected them to veer eastward, toward the Colorado River. Once they crossed the river, they could work their way southeast through Arizona until they reached one of the trails that would lead them back to New Mexico Territory.

That trip would take them several weeks. Fargo didn’t intend to leave Rosa in their hands for anywhere near that long.

It was a race against the sun, one that Fargo inevitably lost. Even as the trail angled eastward, as he expected, the sun dipped below the western horizon. Night fell quickly out here in this semidesert country. Once the sun was gone, darkness descended like the dropping of a curtain. Millions of stars popped into view in the sky as it rapidly deepened from purple to blue to black, but they didn’t cast enough light for Fargo to continue following the tracks left by his quarry.

Reluctantly, he called a halt for the time being, although he hoped that the moon might be bright enough later for him to resume following the tracks. In the meantime, both he and the Ovaro would get some much-needed rest.

Because he hadn’t intended to spend the night out on the trail when he left Las Vegas, he hadn’t brought many supplies with him. But he always had some jerky in his saddlebags, and he never went anywhere without a full canteen.
